SplashPixel – 16x RGB LED Tile

While I’m working on the SplashLight, Robs been cracking on with our next product. This time we have a name decided up front, were calling it the SplashPixel. The SplashPixel has 16 RGB LEDs, each is capable of 30mA and is driven using a  TI TLC5947 on a SPI bus. Unlike other matrix LED panel designs all 16 LEDs are independently controllable and can be on at the same time, giving you a higher possible brightness.

We have designed the SplashPixel with easy expansion in mind. Our goals are to make it quick to set-up multiple SplashPixels and reduce the wiring needed to do it. Using edge connectors you can attach a number of them together to form a larger surface. Each board has its own switch mode power supply, this means we can supply a network of SplashPixels with a higher voltage and lower current.

The boards are on order from our friends in China, it’s going to be a fun Christmas!

    hi there
    any chance you can share the eagle lbr part for the tlc5947

      Hi, Yeah I will look for the library part when I’m home and update the product page with a link.

      Be aware that with TLC5947 it has to clear the output before applying a new value, instead of just switching to the new value. Which is really annoying, toggling the Blank and Latch lines at the same time help reduce this off time though.

      Were still debugging the boards, single boards work well, looks like we have an SPI noise issue when using multiple boards. I’m going to do a write up soon detailing our progress.

      Thanks for the Post!

    Hi,
    the eagle part for the Tlc5947 you supplied, is it the right one? I’ve just downloaded it and loaded into eagle, bit it seems that the measurements on pcb level are completely off. When looking at the data sheet the length is 11mm, but the one downloaded here is 20mm+?

      @David: Hi David,

      You are correct looks like we uploaded an old version of the library and the part is incorrect, I’ll update our library now.
